While faced with the challenges from the pandemic, companies turn to banks for solutions to ensure its survival. Banks play an important role to help the economy remain resilient. But banks have their own challenges, as they may be faced with demand in corporate loans, bad loans and slow credit growth. In this scenario, banks are responding with innovative solution about how they can help their customers deal with the impacts of COVID-19.

The Institute of Corporate Directors presents “Finance Business Restructuring During and After a Crisis”, a webinar that discusses the impacts of COVID-19 in the banking industry and companies. The webinar will highlight the following discussions:

•    How has COVID-19 impacted the Philippine economy and what will it look like post-COVID?
•    Traditional Banking is challenged, contactless payment and digital banking is the new trend
•    Will the pandemic impact and deteriorate banks’ credit losses?
•    How can the banking industry withstand the effects of the pandemic and continue to create            value to their customers?
•    How can companies work best with banks and other financial institutions to help with their              own financial distress?

The webinar will include a panel discussion with Dr. Cielito Habito, former Director-General, NEDA & Chairman, Brain Trust, Inc., Mr. Eugene Acevedo, Chief Executive Officer, Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation; Mr. Paul Lazaro,  Senior Vice President, Development Bank of the Philippines, Mr. Tomas Gomez IV, President and Chief Executive Officer, GM Bank of Luzon, Inc. and Ms. Imelda Tiongson, CEO of Opal Ventures and ICD Trustee.  Moderating the panel is Ms. Sherisa Nuesa, President of ALFM Funds Group and ICD Trustee.

Ms. Tiongson is CEO-President of a multi-billion Special Purpose Vehicle company OPAL Portfolio Investments (SPV-AMC) Inc – which is an ING-formed company in charge of distressed assets and turning around businesses. She started as a traditional banker spanning 22 years of experience with National Australia Bank as Senior Lending Officer and Philippine National Bank, last position was SVP heading Remedial Management.

 

She lectures at Ateneo Graduate School of Business on topics Corporate Finance-Mergers and Acquisitions, Loan Structuring, Problem Loan Management and Corporate Rehabilitation.  She also sits in various boards including publicly listed tech company Xurpas Inc. and Fin Tech Global Resources Inc (Singapore tech based) as well as trustee of several organizations like Institute of Corporate Directors, Fintech Alliance Philippines, Fintech Philippines Association, and more. She is a graduate of Business in Accountancy at RMIT Australia and obtained a perfect score in Accounting for Bankers in exam.

 

She has also provided inputs in several business laws including the Financial Rehabilitation and Insolvency Act, Revised Corporation Code and portions of the Bayanihan Act 11469.

Dr. Habito served as Secretary of Socioeconomic Planning heading the National Economic and Development Authority in the Cabinet of President Fidel V. Ramos in 1992-1998. He is currently Professor of Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University, and Senior Fellow and former Director of the Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development. He is also Chairman of consultancy firm Brain Trust Inc. His op-ed column “No Free Lunch” appears twice weekly in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. A Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors, he has served in the boards of First Gen, Sun Life Financial, Manila Water Company, Metrobank, Metrobank Card Corporation, Steelcorp and Philsteel Holdings, among others. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from Harvard University, Master of Economics from the University of New England (Australia), and B.S. in Agriculture (Major in Agricultural Economics) Summa cum Laude from the University of the Philippines.

MR. PAUL D. LAZARO

Paul D. Lazaro has thirty-nine years of solid experience in banking and management both in the private and public sectors. Twenty-seven years of development banking with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) and 12 years stint in a private commercial bank. He started his career in DBP in 1991 as an Assistant Manager and gradually assumed higher positions until his current designation as Senior Vice President and Group Head, Lending Program Management Group of the Development Bank of the Philippines. He previously served as Alternate Board Member of the National Renewable Energy Board, Alternate Board Member of the Maritime Industry Authority Board and Board Member of the DBP Service Corporation. Prior to DBP, he started his banking career with a private commercial bank and held various positions.

 

He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Santo Tomas and underwent in the same school for his Master’s in Business Administration. He also took up his Certificate in Business Economics at the University of Asia and the Pacific. He is a Career Service eligible – Professional level and a Career Executive Service Officer - Rank V and a licensed Environmental Planner.

MR. LIDUVINO S. GERON

Mr. Geron has spent more than two decades in LANDBANK, holding various positions that equipped him with the experience and competence to lead the Bank’s Agricultural and Development Lending Sector. From a management trainee in 1994, he rose from the ranks and has headed different units, including the Bank’s Visayas Branches Group, Lending Program Management Group, Credit Policy Department, Strategic Planning Group, and, most recently, the Branch Banking Sector.

 

Mr. Geron earned his degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of the Philippines – Los Baños and pursued his master’s degree in Systems Agriculture at the University of Western Sydney which he completed in 1992.

MR. EUGENE ACEVEDO

Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation

Mr. Acevedo is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation. Previous to this, he held senior leadership positions in three banking organizations. As a Managing Director with Citibank, he was Regional Head of Derivatives Structuring based in Singapore, Country Treasurer for the Philippines and Hong Kong, and Global Markets Head for Hong Kong/Taiwan/Macau. 

 

He was President and CEO of Philippine National Bank. Before becoming a banker, Mr. Acevedo was a Lecturer at the University of the Philippines - National Institute of Physics. He is an Outstanding Alumnus Awardee of the University of San Carlos where he graduated BS Physics, magna cum laude, as a DOST scholar.  He finished his Masters in Business Management at the Asian Institute of Management where he was the Javier Nepomuceno Scholar. He also took the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.

 

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors, Trustee and Executive-in-Residence of the Asian Institute of Management, and Trustee of De La Salle John Bosco College, where he graduated high school valedictorian.

MR. TOMAS “MITCH” GOMEZ, IV

President and Chief Executive Officer

GM Bank of Luzon, Inc.

“Mitch” is the CEO of GM Bank and is a past president of the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines.  He is currently a member of the boards of directors of DES Holdings, Inc., Gen. De Jesus College, GM Cycle; and a Teaching Fellow of ICD.

 

His past board directorships include the Agricultural Guarantee Fund Pool, Quendancor, and the Finex Foundation for Entrepreneurship, Inc.  Prior to GM Bank, he worked in various management positions with Ayala Financial, Ayala Life Assurance, and One Financial Group.  He graduated B.S. in Business/Economics, cum laude, from Notre Dame de Namur University, and obtained his Master in Business Administration from the University of the Philippines.

 

He has attended executive courses from the Harvard Business School, the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, and the University of Asia & the Pacific.  GM Bank is a countryside financial institution focused on serving small holder and commercial farmers, microenterprises, and SMEs with 49 banking offices in Central and North Luzon.

Ms. Sherisa P. Nuesa is currently a member of the Boards of Directors of Manila Water Company, Ayala Land, the ALFM Mutual Funds Group, Integrated Micro Electronics, Inc, AC Energy Phils, Inc, Far Eastern University, and FERN Realty Corporation. She is also a Trustee of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and other foundations. She also serves as a Senior Adviser to the Boards of Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. and Vicsal Development Corporation. She is the Chairman of the Judicial Reform Initiative.

 

Ms. Nuesa was a former Managing Director of conglomerate Ayala Corporation, and served in various senior management positions within the Ayala Group: Ayala Land Inc., Manila Water Company, and Integrated Microelectronics, Inc.

 

She was ING FINEX CFO of the Year for 2008. She holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Ateneo-Regis Graduate School of Business, and a BSC Accounting degree from the Far Eastern University (Summa cum Laude). She attended advanced management programs in Harvard Business School and Stanford University.
